BACKACHE.

Q. : Give the Backache of Aesculus.

A. :

Backache during
pregnancy where the pain is in the sacro-iliac synchondroses, and that
part of the back gives out, compelling her to sit.

Q. : What is the Backache of Calcarea fluorica ?

A. :

Backache
simulating spinal irritation ; pain in the lower part of the back with a
fulness or burning pain.

Lumbago worse on beginning to move, and relieved by continued motion.

Lumbago from strains.

Q. : What symptoms has Kalium phosphoricum in the back ?

There is rheumatic lameness of the back, which is worse after rest and
on just commencing to move ; they are especially worse on rising from a
sitting position ; there seems to be a paralytic tendency.

Q. : What drug has these same symptoms ?

A. :

Rhus tox.

Q. : What drug has stiffness in the lumbar region with a sudden loss of
power or attempting to move ?

A. :

Sulphur.

Q. : What is the Backache of Oxalic acid ?

A. :

Acute pain in
the back extending down the thighs, relieved by change of posture : the
back feels too weak to support the body ; the pains are worse when
thinking of them.

Q. : What symptoms has Phosphorus in the back that are characteristic ?

A. :

Intense burning
pains in the spine between the scapulae ; the dorsal spines are very
sensitive.

Q. : Give the indications for Rhus in Lumbago.

A. :

Pain in hack on
attempting to rise ; rheumatic pains in the back and stiff neck from
sitting in a draft ; the lumbago is a condition which may not be relieved
by motion and still indicate Rhus.

Q. : What drugs have Backache worse while sitting ?

A. :

Cobalt,
Zincum, Sepia,
and Cannabis
ind.

Q. : When is Ledum indicated in Backache ?

A. :

There is a
stiffness of the back as after sitting a long time.

Q. : What drugs have pains in the lumbar region compelling the patient
to get up and walk about ?

A. :

Staphisagria
and Kalium
carbonica

Q. : What drugs are useful for rheumatic pains in the back which are
worse in the morning before rising ?

A. :

Petroleum and
Ruta.

Q. : What drugs have a stiff back which is worse when first beginning
to move ?

A. :

Anacardium and
Conium.

Q. : What is a remedy for a sudden kink or catch in the back ?

A. :

Secale.

Q. : What remedy has the symptom that the patient cannot turn over in
bed without first sitting up on account of rheumatic pains in back ?

A. :

Nux vomica.

Q. : What is the Backache of Nux ?

A. :

In the lumbar
region ; worse at night when lying in bed ; cannot turn over without
sitting up ; lumbago.

BOILS.

Q. : When is Arnica the remedy in Boils ?

A. :

It produces
crops of boils all over body, beginning with great soreness and going on
to suppuration.

Boils which have partially matured become sluggish.

Q. : In Boils when is Belladonna useful ?

A. :

When they are
very painful.

Swellings where there is throbbing, redness and tendency to
suppuration.

Q. : When is Calcarea sulph. indicated ?

A. :

When there is
great swelling and tumefaction and the boil is discharging.

Q. : When should Silicea be given ?

A. :

In boils which
occur in crops and do not heal readily, but continue to discharge a thin
pus ; areola indurated.

Q. : When is Hepar sulphur to be preferred in Boils ?

A. :

Where there is
much throbbing and sticking in them.

In the early stages if given high it will sometimes abort them, if
given low it will favor the ripening process.

Q. : Give indications for Lachesis.

A. :

The surface is
very sensitive, bluish, and the central sore is apt to be surrounded by
many small pimples.

Q. : Give three remedies most useful for a disposition to Boils.

A. :

Calc.
carbonica, Lyc.
and
Sulphur.

BONES, DISEASES OF.

Q. : What are the Bone symptoms of Asa foetida ?

A. :

Periosteal
inflammations and ulcerations ; the ulcers are sensitive and intolerant to
dressings ; the discharge is offensive.

Q. : Give the indications for Calcarea fluorica in Bone diseases.

A. :

Hard, rough,
corrugated elevations on bones, bruises of bones ; caries, leading to the
formation of pelvic abscesses, affections of nasal bones, caries from
syphilis or abuse of Mercury.

Q. : What action has Calcarea phosphorica on the Bones ?

A. :

It has an
action at the places where the bones form a suture or joint ; it is also
useful to favor the uniting of fractures, hastening the formation of
callus.

Q. : What are the symptoms of Fluoric acid on the Bones and periosteum
?

A. :

It produces
caries of the long bones, with thin and excoriating discharges, relieved
by cold applications.

Dental fistulae and bone felons, with offensive discharges.

Q. : When is

Silicea
indicated in Bone troubles ?

A. :

In scrofulous
children whose bones are curved, spinal curvature ; Potts’
disease ; fistulous tracks running to diseased bone.

Q. : How does

Phosphorus
compare ?

A. :

It is useful in
necrosis, especially of the lower jaw ; also caries.

Q. : Mention some other drugs useful in Caries.

A. :

Platina
mur.,
Caries of the
tarsus ; Angustura, especially
of the long bones ; Strontiana
carbonica,
of the
femur ; Aurum, cranial
bones and bones of nose and palate after abuse of Mercury
; pains aggravated by touch ; burning pains, worse at night ; excessively
fetid discharges.

Q. : What remedy is useful for injuries of the bones ?

A. :

Symphytum.

Q. : What remedy is useful in Syphilitic affections of the long bones ?

A. :

Stillingia.

BRAIN, DISEASES OF.

Q. : When is Aconite useful in cerebral affections ?

A. :

Idiopathic
cerebral inflammation, cerebral congestion from anger or exposure to sun.

Q. : Give indications for Belladonna.

A. :

Congestion to
the head, face red, or it may be pale, eyes injected, throbbing headache ;
is drowsy or wakeful.

Jerking of limbs.

Sharp, shooting pains, forcing patient to cry out ; they come suddenly
and disappear suddenly ; dilated pupils.

Grinding of the teeth ; often convulsions.

Q. : How is Belladonna distinguished from Glonoine in cerebral
affections ?

A. :

They are quite
similar.

Glonoine is

worse
from bending head backwards, Belladonna
better ; Glonoine
better by motion, Belladonna
worse ; Glonoine
relief from
uncovering head, Belladonna
relief from
covering head.

Q. :

What drugs have
the symptom of a swashing feeling in the brain when moving about ?

A. :

Cinchona,
Carbo an., Belladonna, Spigelia, Rhus tox.,
and
Sulphuric acid.

Q. : What are the cerebral symptoms of Hyoscyamus ?

A. :

Delirium,
prostration and stupor, open mouth, dropped jaw.

Cerebral inflammation with pulsating waves through the head ; relieved
by shaking head or sitting with head bent forward.

Q. : What symptoms referring to the brain call for Kalium bromatum ?

A. :

Brain fag,
benumbed feeling in the brain, sensation as if about to lose senses —
caused by overwork.

Q. : Give indications for Phosphorus in softening of the brain.

A. :

Dull pain in
head ; wearied, tired feeling and difficulty in walking.

Q. : When is Nux vomica indicated in brain affections ?

A. :

Cerebral
softening due to sedentary habits and intemperance.

Vertigo in the morning.

Vacillating gait, headache when exciting mind.

Brain fag, with gastric symptoms.

Q. : Mention two other drugs useful in brain Fag.

A. :

Picric acid and
Phosphoric acid.

Q. : Give cerebral symptoms of Stramonium.

A. :

Violent
delirium, restlessness, screaming out as if terrified, grinding of teeth,
etc.

Q. : When is Zincum useful in brain affections ?

A. :

When the brain
becomes affected in the course of nervous diseases, scarlatina, or summer
complaints ; paralysis from softening of brain following suppressed foot
sweat.

Q. : What are the cerebral symptoms of Veratrum viride ?

A. :

Cerebral
hyperaemia with febrile condition ; headache, throbbings of carotids,
flushed face ; full, hard, bounding pulse.

BRIGHT’S DISEASE.

BRONCHITIS.

Q. : When is Aconite the remedy in this disease ?

A. :

At the
commencement when due to checked perspiration.

It mitigates the dry cough, lessens the fever and prevents extension of
capillary congestion.

Q. : Give indications for Belladonna in Bronchitis.

A. :

There is
tickling in the larynx and a dry, hacking cough, which is paroxysmal ;
dryness and tightness in the upper part of the chest, worse evenings and
at night, the larynx is sore and hot.

Q. : In what affections of the chest is Natrum muriaticum useful ?

In chronic bronchial catarrhs, winter coughs and asthma, where there is
a profuse secretion of mucus.

Q. : When is Ammonium carb. indicated in Bronchitis ?

A. :

Where there is
copious accumulation of mucus in the lungs.

The patient is weak, coughs continually, but raises little.

There is congestive fulness and rawness of the chest with discharge of
bluish, slate colored mucus, and rattling of large bubbles of mucus in the
chest.

Q. : Give indications for Causticum in Bronchitis.

A. :

Deep hollow dry
cough, with pain in the chest, especially under sternum.

Rattling in chest when coughing, with soreness.

Tightness of chest ; must take a deep breath, often involuntary
spurting of urine when coughing.

Q. : What remedies are useful for bronchial Catarrh with profuse
expectoration ?

A. :

Balsam Peru,
and Pix
liquida.

Q. : What are the indications for Bryonia in Bronchitis ?

Pressure over sternum, great dyspnoea, dry cough, seeming to start from
stomach, worse after a meal ; pains in sides.

Q. : What are the respiratory symptoms of Carbo vegetabilis ?

A. :

Evening
hoarseness, with rawness and scraping in the larynx and trachea ;
oppression of chest ; bronchitis in old people when there is a loose
rattling in the chest on coughing or breathing.

Profuse yellow, fetid expectoration ; bronchial hemorrhage.

Q. : What is the action of Ipecac in bronchial affections ?

A. :

There is a dry
spasmodic cough, ending in choking and gagging, and a tickling which
extends from the larynx to the extremities of the bronchi ; coarse rales
all over the chest, with violent paroxysms of coughing and retching, face
pale and great dyspnoea ; incessant cough with every breath.

Q. : How do these symptoms compare with Antimonium tart. ?

A. :

Fine rales, but
very little cough, increased dyspnoea, weakness and drowsiness ; the chest
seems full of mucus, but they cannot cough it up.

Q. : What other remedy has a similar symptom to the latter, and is
especially applicable to old people ?

A. :

Baryta
carbonica

Q. : What are the indications for Chelidonium ?

A. :

Capillary
bronchitis following measles or whooping cough with hepatic symptoms,
oppression of the chest, fan-like motion of the alae nasi, and one hot and
one cold foot.

The cough is loose and rattling, and the expectoration is not easily
raised.

Q. : What other drug has as characteristics a fan-like motion of the
alae nasi, a hot foot and a cold one ?

A. :

Lycopodium.

Q. : Give symptoms of Kalium bichromicum.

A. :

Bronchitis,
especially if glands be involved.

The expectoration is of thick, tenacious, viscid mucus ; it can be
drawn into strings to the feet ; worse from eating ; relieved when warm in
bed ; croupy cough, hoarseness, with pains in the epigastrium.

Q. : What are the symptoms of Kalium carbonicum in Bronchitis ?

A. :

Intense
dyspnoea, cough worse at two or three in the morning ; there are stitching
pains through the lower part of the right lung, accompanied by puffiness
of the face ; much mucus on chest ; the expectoration is difficult and
tenacious, or of small round lumps.

Q. : Give the respiratory symptoms of Kalium sulphuricum.

A. :

There is a
cough, with great rattling
of mucus
on the
chest ; the cough is worse in a warm room, and relieved in the cool, open
air.

The rattling may occur with or without much cough.

Q. : Give indications for Lycopodium in bronchial catarrh.

A. :

Where the
smaller tubes are affected, much mucus, rales, rattling breathing, cough
and dyspnoea ; expectoration yellowish and thick ; right lung more
affected.

Q. : Give in brief the indications for Phosphorus.

A. :

Cough worse on
going from warm into cold air.

Dry, tickling cough, caused by laryngeal or sub-sternal irritation ;
tearing pain under sternum, as if something were torn loose.

Suffocative pressure across upper part of the chest.

Expectoration is yellowish and blood streaked.

It is largely the bronchial symptoms that indicate

Phosphorus
in pneumonia.

Q. : What are indications for Sanguinaria ?

A. :

Burning in
the chest
;
dry, hacking cough
and feeling of dryness in the air passages.

Oppression of breathing and a tenacious, difficult expectoration, which
is apt to be rust colored ; there are also sharp stitching pains through
the right lung.

Q. : When is Sulphur indicated in bronchial affections ?

A. :

Chronic
bronchitis where there is a large accumulation.

of thick muco-pus.

Patient has suffocative spells.

Loud rales through the chest.
